BCS Informs Public the “Ten Things You Should Know About Mold” from the Environmental Protection Agency

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), is informing the public about the new list of “Ten Things You Should Know About Mold” from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), released in September, 2016.

The list contains ten items the EPA thinks the public should know, including:

1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.
2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
o Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
o Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
o Increasing ventilation
o Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning Services, stated: “As we frequently deal with mold removal, we know the importance of home and business owners and government and school building maintenance workers to be aware of and informed about mold risks. We support the EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment and as such, want the public to be educated on the facts about mold. Our company prides itself in working with clients to take any worry out about handling mold where it requires professional removal.”

Building Cleaning Services has an excellent record of success in remedying Los Angeles mold infestations when they occur. One recent client stated BCS “went out of their way to help me when mold struck my apartment. They talked me through all the details, came onsite to give me a free inspection and advice, and kept information on file for later reference. They were very thorough, resourceful and extremely helpful.”

Building Cleaning Services Provides List of Signs of Mold

Environmental Friendly Cleaning Company Helps Public to Be Watchful for Early Signs of Mold

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services, (https://buildingcleaningservices.net/), In light of heavy rains experienced in Los Angeles throughout January, a Los Angeles mold remediation company, has re-issued its list of signs of mold in a home or other type of building. The company urges people to take immediate action if any indications of mold are present, especially after heavy rain.

There can be potential adverse health symptoms experienced by people living or working in mold-affected buildings. This includes:
• Asthma-like symptoms
• Sore eyes
• Itchy skin
• Runny or blocked nose
• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Sore throat

Building Cleaning Services says that people can become very concerned about mold but stresses removal of mold by a trustworthy company that consistently gets clearance tests on its work is important to relieve those worries and stress. Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning Services, stated: “If you see signs of mold in a building, it is vital to get a mold inspection at once, so that the problem does not expand and become unnecessarily costly to remove. BCS is often the company of choice when advising on whether or not mold removal needs to be professionally removed. We pride ourselves in helping the client become informed.”

Signs of mold include:

1. Mold Smell: A primary sign of mold is a moldy smell. When the smell is worse in certain rooms, then mold is probably growing in or near that area.
2. Visual Mold: Sometimes people see mold without realizing it. Small amounts of mold means there is enough moisture for mold to grow, and may indicate more mold behind walls.
3. Humidity: Some types of molds can live off humidity in the air. A humidity level of over 60% can lead to mold growth.
4. Condensation: If you see condensation, it could be a sign of moisture problems, and possibly a mold problem.
5. Water Leaks: If a leak is undetected for a long time, it is very likely to cause mold.
6. Leaking Roof or Attic: Signs of a leaking roof are water damage on the ceiling below the attic. Unhandled water leaks can lead to mold growth.
7. Flooding: Flooding that left materials, such as drywall, wet for more than 24 hours, probably caused mold.
8. Damp Basement: If you notice your basement is often damp, this could be a sign of a mold problem.
9. Water Stains: Another sign of a water problem is water stains on walls, ceilings and other surfaces. If there is mold growing the stain might be darker color.
10. Paint Peeling: When there is a lot of moisture, paint may start to come off surfaces. Mold could be lurking.
11. Rust: Rust in the home can be a sign of a moisture problem.
12. Warping: When moisture gets into wood, drywall and other materials it can cause warping. If you see warped walls or other surfaces, you should check to see if there is a moisture problem or mold.
13. Deterioration: Seeing building materials which have deteriorated from moisture can be another sign of mold.

Los Angeles Mold Remediation Company Warns of Dangers of Mold in Schools: Regular checks can prevent Extensive Mold Removal

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS), (https://buildingcleaningservices.net/) a Los Angeles mold remediation company said that schools should be alert to potential mold after heavy rains and advised regular maintenance checks of air ducts and ventilation. This follows a potential $250,000 mold issue at the Coleytown Middle School in Westport, CT. Mold was discovered in one class room and this snowballed into potentially 30 classrooms so affected. On Oct. 24, 2016, the Board of Education approved $93,822 for mold abatement in the first of the classrooms. Superintendent of Schools Colleen Palmer said the mold problem stems from a design flaw in the unit ventilator of the walls, and substandard insulation.

Cabinetry, made of press board wood, had been built inches above the ventilation system. The wood trapped the moisture from the ventilator creating the mold issue, according to The Wesport News.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning services, stated: “The situation in Westport, CT demonstrates the potential extent of mold contamination when there’s substandard building, in this case, installation that occurred 20 years ago. We have also seen very recent news reports of mold removal being done in schools in Plymouth, MI, in Terre Haute, IN, in Aurora, IL, and in Kingston, PA. And the potential for mold intensifies in the winter months when kids tend to spend more time indoors.”

A fact sheet on mold in schools by the EPA states:
• “Potential health effects associated with mold exposure may include irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of both mold allergic and non-allergic people.
• “In sensitive individuals allergic reactions can be caused by breathing in or touching mold.
• “Dead mold may still cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is not enough to simply kill the mold and leave it there, the mold must be removed.

The fact sheet goes on to list reasons why mold could be growing in a school, the typical places where it could grow, and how schools could manage any mold problem that exists. The fact sheet can be found here: www.epa.gov/iaq/schools/pdfs/publications/moldfactsheet.pdf

Building Cleaning Services has assisted concerned schools with mold issues that ensured neither child or teacher was adversely impacted. The company comes with many favorable reviews because of its ability to take the worry out of mold infestation.

BCS Recommends Public Download List of 300 Studies Linking Illness to Mold

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services recommends the public download a list of more than 300 studies linking contaminants in water-damaged and mold-impacted buildings with various illnesses.

The list was compiled by MomsAware.org, an organization whose mission is to provide practical assistance to families and individuals harmed by toxic mold, and to raise public awareness of the negative impact of toxic mold, chemicals, pesticides, and other environmental hazards on their health.

The website offers a list of studies that may be downloaded and shared with others who need to know the connection between water-damaged buildings and adverse health conditions.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning Services, stated: “We urge the public to take advantage of this information compiled by MomsAware.org, linking various health problems with mold and water damage. And we urge anyone who suspects they have mold in their home to get the residence tested by a certified mold inspector as soon as possible, to avoid health problems for their family.”

Building Cleaning Services Alerts the Public of Danger of Mold in Older Office Buildings

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), a mold remediation company, is alerting the public of the dangers of mold in older office buildings. This comes in light of a recent $1 million mold remediation project that has been proposed to remove mold in a Department of Education building in Dandridge,Tennesee.

The proposal is to restore the Department of Education building, part of which was built in 1845. Mold problems caused the office staff to move out in July of this year and find quarters in a bank building in Dandridge. The mold removal proposal is being considered, as opposed to a $11 million proposal for a brand new building.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning Services, stated: “It is vital for owners and managers of older office buildings, to be on the lookout for mold and have an independent mold inspector test for mold whenever common signs are present, such as water staining, musty odors, etc. We see this often in buildings we work on in the Los Angeles area. If mold is suspected, it is best to have testing done by an independent company that doesn’t do the actual mold removal work. That way there is no conflict of interest.”

Study Reveals Possible Role Mold Plays in Asthma Development

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), wants the public to be aware of a study released in September 2011 that shows exposure to mold at certain points in a child’s development has an impact on the development of asthma.

The study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and by scientists at the University of Cincinnati (UC) found that mold exposure during a critical window of child development was associated with a three-fold greater risk for asthma later in childhood.

Information on the NIEHS study can be found here:
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/newsletter/2011/september/science-asthma/index.cfm

This study also references previous other studies where asthma is estimated to cause several thousand deaths each year and to cost more than $15 billion per year in direct medical expenses.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning Services, stated: “It is important for parents of young children to be aware of the signs of mold in their homes, and when mold is suspected, to get the residence tested by a certified mold inspector as soon as possible. Asthma is a serious problem, and when we know there is a correlation between mold and asthma, it becomes even more important to remove mold when it shows up.”

Building Cleaning Services Works With Real Estate Management to Remove Mold and Protect Tenants’ Health

LOS ANGELES, CA: A reputable realty & property management firm in West Los Angeles wanted to ensure that their tenants’ mold concerns were quickly dealt with in order to protect their health. They turned to Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), as a company that understands the relationship between tenants, property owners and management companies, and the need to ensure a fast resolution to the discovery of water damage and mold.

BCS performs mold remediation and environmental deep cleanings when there is cross-contamination in apartments and homes. BCS is often chosen for the job because it consistently gets excellent results. Reviews of BCS’s work is available on Yelp at http://www.yelp.com/biz/building-cleaning-services-glendale

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning services, stated: “It is imperative that ‘cross contamination’ is identified and addressed. This is where mold is found and disturbed in a bedroom, for example, and the mold spores go air-borne. With the occupants moving through the rooms of the house, the spores float and settle in other rooms. When air samples are taken of these other areas, the mold spores show up in the lab results even though there is no mold damage in that room. The two-fold approach, therefore, is to remove the actual mold by working in sealed containments built to prevent further cross contamination, and then in the other areas where lab tests detect just mold spores, a process known as ‘environmental deep cleaning’ is performed.”

Building Cleaning Services Warns Renters to Avoid Mold and Health Problems

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), a mold removal company based in Los Angeles, is warning renters to watch for signs of mold related health problems, so they can avoid the fate of a Bay area family. According to a recent KTVU article, a Danville, California family is trying to move on from a rented house they say has made them sick and put them in limbo as they seek to have the home cleared of toxic mold that permeates the residence.

City officials have restricted access to the million-dollar home because of the mold contamination. Municipal inspectors found toxic mold spores known as penicillium and aspergillas in high concentrations. The family claims the environment made their kids sick for months with coughs, sore throats, nosebleeds, and wheezing. The couple say they can only make short visits inside and cannot bring their four children inside, and cannot take their possessions out of the home.

The couple discovered the mold problem only after numerous doctor visits, when they were unable to find the reason for health issues experienced by their children. The family had an inspection of the attic, where heavy amounts of black mold were found caked on the beams, apparently from a leaky roof.

Kathy Liverance, co-owner of Building Cleaning services, stated: “Renters need to be alert to instances of respiratory health issues, especially repeating or unexplained issues, and know that these could be related to mold. The sooner such mold infestations are handled, the better, to prevent the concentrations of mold in the air reaching dangerous levels. We work with property owners to quickly assist their renters in such a situation.”

Mold Can Lower The Value of Your Home, Media Report Warns

Building Cleaning Services Encourages Home Owners to be Vigilant about Mold

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), a mold removal company based in Los Angeles, is frequently called to determine the degree of mold damage in homes being sold. A US News report addressed this in an article in March this year headlined: “Is Your Home a Death Trap? You May Be Eligible for Compensation.” “Discovering toxins in your home is often terrifying—it’s not just lowering the value of your home, but it’s also potentially causing long-lasting health problems,” writer Devon Thorsby reported. However, not everyone has the money to shell out to fix a problem they didn’t see coming,” Thorsby stated. www.yahoo.com/news/home-death-trap-may-eligible-compensation-161742876.html?ref=gs

Aware of this, BCS works with home-owners and insurance companies to fully brief them on mold and their options as well as how, under California law, mold removal companies should also be requiring the owner to have asbestos testing if remediation is called for.

US News provided good advice; Check local laws regarding disclosing home defects in a real estate transaction. “Most states require a seller to disclose any known defects, whether it’s possible mold, knowledge of asbestos in the insulation, the presence of lead-based paint or a recent radon gas test revealing elevated levels in the home.”

Also, check the insurance policy to ensure it does cover mold remediation.

BCS recommends those selling their property to fully disclose if mold or hazardous materials are present in the home. It is a less expensive option to a lawsuit that could result in significant damages being awarded, especially if the new owners or their family become ill within months of purchasing the property.

Mold Damage Still A Risk Leading To Lawsuits: Building Cleaning Services Advises On Quick Remedying

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (https://buildingcleaningservices.net), a mold removal company based in Los Angeles, concurs with environmental law experts that “Mold contamination has become an increasing problem in homes, offices, and other indoor places across the United States.” BCS advises employers and landlords to be alert to mold in office buildings and dwellings and to address it quickly to avoid potential litigation.

On March 11, 2013, a San Diego Superior Court Judge John Meyer approved a settlement of $575,000 in a mold exposure lawsuit brought by a family of 4, including 3 young girls who were exposed to mold, water damage, dust mites and moldy smells in their former rented apartment.

“Mold can cause a lot of health problems to people” and because of this, “many different laws have been passed, which protect the rights of people in case of mold contamination,” according to one law firm.

The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) reports that at least seven states have enacted mold legislation, including California. At one point, Law journal articles estimated there were about 10,000 mold cases nationwide.

BCS is renowned for taking the worry out of mold concerns and comes highly recommended (yelp link). It says a quick resolution to mold could prevent litigation from mold leading to health risks.

The California Toxic Mold Protection Act of 2001 was enacted to address increasing concerns regarding health effects from exposure to indoor molds.
